Team Member Instructions

 The Word in Warfare

Team Member Instructions

PLEASE BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE READING REQUIREMENTS. SEE YOUR ASSIGNED TEAM LEADER WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

These instructions are general. You may receive further, specific instructions by your team leader when you arrive on site. Follow these and their instructions closely.

1. Please be sure you have signed your name and phone number on your team sign up sheet.

2. You are responsible to bring the following items with you:

  • a. Bring your own bible.
  • b. If you are reading at night bring your own flashlight
  • c. A folding chair (unless instructed otherwise by your team leader)
  • d. Appropriate clothing (For both modesty and weather)
  • e. "Safety" items as needed, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, umbrella, rain apparel etc.
  • f. A pen and notepad (optional) to take personal notes as the Word is being read.

3. Reading instructions:

  • a. Read in a normal voice, but loud enough to be heard by those around you, and somewhat louder for people approaching or passing by.
  • b. Read one chapter only, rotating with others on your team.
  • c. Listen attentively while others are reading.
  • d. Avoid conversation with all others, including fellow team members, especially conversation that distracts other hearers. If you must discuss something important please first inform your team captain and then move several feet from the group.
  • e. Pray often, but very quietly or even silently.
  • f. Important: Look ahead to the next chapter you anticipate you will be reading in your turn. If it appears to be unusually difficult for you (a number of difficult bible words, names, places, etc.) notify your team leader and have that chapter assigned to someone else. There is no reason to stumble needlessly, as some people have less difficulty with bible Words than others. Don't be embarrassed by this.
  • g. The reading pace is very important. The reading times are based upon an estimate of 8-10 verses per minute. This is not speed-reading but it is reading quickly. It is better to mispronounce a word then spend several seconds trying to get it right. Occasionally your team leader will advise the team members on the pace at which they are reading and may often say to the team, "We need to increase (or slow down) our reading pace." Do not rush, but do try to stay on schedule.
  • h. An unknown bystander may ask to join you. Your team leader will determine if they can join, and if so, for how long. Only rarely would we exclude a willing participant. But everyone must read and sign these instructions before joining the team.

4. Other instructions:

  • a. You may be asked to hold the "We are reading from the book of___" sign when you are not the person currently reading. Hold it comfortably but in such a way as to be seen by anyone approaching your team. People need to know we are reading from a passage of Scripture.
  • b. Please remember that the Word of God is such a spiritually powerful and offensive weapon that the enemy cannot hinder it, regardless of how aggressive the attempts to disrupt might be. These situations, however, are rare and the likelihood of experiencing them is minimal.
  • c. Prayer is our other weapon. If someone's reading is being hindered, only pray. Do not attempt to intervene. Leave that to your team leader who has been instructed how to address the distraction.
  • d. If you are reading and being heckled or shouted down, do not respond in any way. DO NOT increase your reading volume to match theirs, simply stay the course. The real power is in reading the Word "out loud" not "louder than" your distracters.
  • e. Be reverent at all times, especially to the reading of the Word. Often times we are too casual regarding the Word of God being read. That cannot happen here. There is always the temptation to turn yourself off to the Word after hearing it read for an extended time.
  • f. Do not engage anyone in religious or other distracting conversation. Religious spirits hate this. Refer problem cases to your team leader.
  • g. Keep focused. The reading must continue. The object is for us to read the Word aloud and without stopping except for announced, predetermined times of prayer and/or worship and only as directed by the on-site leadership team. Please do not act independently.
  • h. Please do not stop the reading for any other concerns. Even in the event of an emergency, an urgent prayer or other need, it is best for the member(s) involved to step away from those reading so the reading is not halted at any time for any reason.

If you have any questions ask your team leader. Any additional suggestions you have regarding this ministry are encouraged. E-mail comments and critiques to chet@evangel.org.

I understand that this is a corporate and therefore a cooperative event. I agree to follow the above requirements and will leave immediately if asked to do so for not following these or other instructions given by the leadership.
