Teen wearing pro-life T-shirt asked to leave local mall

By: Dorothy Moore

CONCORD--- A teenager was recently asked to leave Concord Mills for wearing an “offensive” shirt. Graham Pittman, who on July 19 was involved in Operation Save America (OSA) events, went to a movie afterward wearing a T-shirt stating “Homosexuality is sin, Islam is a lie and abortion is murder.” A security guard first asked Pittman to turn the shirt inside out because a shopper was offended at its message. When the young man refused, the security guard asked him to leave. Sharon Campbell, the mall’s director of marketing, said a homosexual had taken offense at the phrase “homosexuality is sin.” “This is something that is part of our efforts to provide our shoppers with an enjoyable shopping experience,” said Campbell, adding that a dress code is posted at mall entrances and is enforced by mall security. “Proper inoffensive attire, including shirt and shoes, is required at all times,” the code says. OSA director Flip Benham said members of the pro-life group will return to the mall with the same messages. “The hope is this: that other Christians will be inspired to courage to say the kinds of things that God would have us say,” Benham said. “There isn’t anything we’ve said on that T-shirt that isn’t true.” (7/22/2003)
