Katrina, A Judgment From God Part II

Katrina, A Judgment From God Part II
By Flip Benham
September 21, 2005

“Oh, how I wish God would speak, that He would open His lips against you and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. ” Job 11:5-6.

We have seen God's church doing extraordinarily well meeting the needs of brothers and sisters in the hurricane ravaged south. Operation Save America teams have been there from the very beginning with “a loaf of bread in one hand and the Bread of Life in the other.” The mercy ministry (the mother side of God) takes care of those torn to pieces by sin, this world, and the devil. The mercy ministry has always been a high calling in the Church of Jesus Christ. But the mercy ministry is only one side of God. There is another side to Him - the Father side!

The devil doesn't seem to mind the church's involvement in mending the things that he has broken. As a matter of fact, even the world looks upon the mercy ministry as a good thing. Newspapers are now lauding the efforts of churches in Biloxi, Gulfport, and New Orleans for doing good deeds for brothers and sisters in need. So long as the church stays on the mercy side - feeding the poor, helping the sick, caring for the weary and tired - the devil and this world will leave it alone, and sometimes even applaud it.

The apostate churches in America focus upon the mercy ministry – taking good care of the needs of our fellow man. They do it well, yet the mercy ministry represents only one side of God. The apostate churches in America represent an emasculated effeminate church that wants nothing to do with the judgmental, masculine, father-side of God. This church cannot conceive of an all-loving God devouring people and nations. It cannot fathom God's hand being at work in a hurricane like Katrina. The Democratic Party falls directly under the strong delusion of the apostate church. Though the Name of Jesus is often bandied about, it is a different gospel and a different spirit which is really no gospel at all!

But let the church embark on representing the prophetic ministry (the father side of God) and all hell breaks loose! True wisdom really does have two sides. “Behold then God's goodness and severity…” Romans 11:22. God is both merciful and severe. He is both mother and father. His severity towards us is meant to bring us to our knees that He may pour His mercy into us. Yes indeed , “…Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:13 . But mercy can never be dispensed apart from judgment. No Justice, no mercy. It's just that simple.

You see the father side of God is the prophetic ministry . The prophetic ministry of God will discipline in wrath, His straying children. “…In His love and mercy He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. Yet they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy and He Himself fought against them.” Isaiah 63: 9-10. God wounded His people that He might ultimately heal them. This kind of ministry is not allowed to be proclaimed in the hallowed halls of today's Church in America. We simply cannot conceive that God Himself would become our enemy. But we deliberately forget that we have legally murdered over 50 million of His precious image bearers by a monstrosity called Roe V. Wade. You think God wouldn't be a little bit upset by this?

The prophetic ministry presents the side of God that says, this is right and this is wrong – very judgmental. No tolerance here for those who will not stand on the truth. The prophetic ministry will expose the lie of the devil and crush his head with the truth of God's Word. No compromise here with the lies of the enemy. This is the intolerant side of God that the devil will not tolerate because he cannot. This is the warrior side of God. It is this side of God that the Church of Jesus Christ in America has failed to represent. It is the side of God that calls men – not women – to storm the very gates of hell and they will not prevail.

Why has the church failed in representing the father side of God? After all, He is known in the Bible as Father, not mother! Because it is costly. Standing upon the Word of God in a prophetic way will never be tolerated by the world, the flesh, or the devil.

If you are looking for an easy way to build a church and get big numbers attending, you will do your level best to hide this side of God. In fact, the “seeker-friendly” churches in America are doing just that. They preach mercy, but never justice. They preach mother, but never Father. They preach peace, but never war. They preach compromise, but never standing alone. They preach tolerance, but never judgment. They preach forgiveness, but never preach against sin. They preach rebuilding, but never repentance.

This is where we find ourselves today in the aftermath of Katrina. No one wants to say that God's hand might be in this cataclysm. Why? Because it does not fit our conception of who God is. And also because the world, the flesh, and the devil will fight us tooth and nail to cover-up the truth that God is revealing through His judgments. What is that truth?

“This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.'” Isaiah 30:15.

If you listened carefully to the President's speech Sunday night concerning the devastation of hurricane Katrina, you probably noticed that something was conspicuous by its absence. The word “repentance” was not mentioned once. Yes, the President called upon God to bring us through this travail, have mercy on those suffering, and to help us rebuild - but not one mention of the word “repentance.” No call for a national introspection to see if there might not be something in us that brought Katrina on.

The reason there was no call for national repentance, of course, is that we simply do not believe that God would ever do such a thing like bring a hurricane that took so many innocent lives and caused such cataclysmic destruction. Oh, He may have acted like that in Old Testament times, but that was before He became a Christian. In the New Testament, He is kind and gentle with never a discouraging word. He wants to be our best friend. He wants to meet our every need. God has become for us in America a means to achieving an end – to make us happy. We are all, even the most evangelical of us, humanists.

C.S. Lewis said it best about Christianity in his day, “I now know that God is not a figment of my imagination, for He is not at all what I imagined Him to be.” The God of the Bible is a consuming fire and not at all tame. He does not desire to be our best friend, He desires us to know that He is God. He is the end of all being, not a means to an end. Our modern day churches are espousing an evangelical humanism that is an utter abomination to God.

When disasters came in Jesus' time, and the people were trying to figure them out and to fix blame, the one word he used was, “repent.” Luke 13: 1-5. Why would our President not view disasters in the same way our Lord Jesus did? Most likely it is because the pastors, prophets, and priests of our day do not see God's hand at work in Katrina. Or, if they do see it, they are afraid of what the people might do to them if they rightly proclaim God's Word.

The Prophet Isaiah was called to preach to the people of Israel a message of repentance. Israel had fallen far from God but she knew it not. She was having great church services but God said her hands were full of blood and that He would not hear her prayers (Isaiah 1:10-17). God inflicted her with wounds and judgments but the people would not respond. “…What troubles you now that you have gone up to the roofs, O town full of commotion, O city of tumult and revelry? Your slain were not killed by the sword, nor did they die in battle…” Isaiah 22:2-3. Does this sound like a city you may know, like New Orleans ?

The call of the priests and prophets to the people of that day was to rebuild, not to repent. It is the same for us in this day. We hear the call to rebuild and call upon Almighty God to help us in that endeavor. We don't hear anything about the fact that God Himself may be sending judgments upon us, pleading with us to return to Him. He loves us but His love has two sides. His discipline upon our nation is not to be despised but to be heeded, that we may once again experience His marvelous mercy and grace.

But we do not hear the voice of God and we do not see His hand at work in Katrina. Listen to His call to the people of Isaiah's time: “…but you did not look to the one who made it, or have regard to the one who planned it long ago. The Lord Almighty called you on that day to weep and wail, to tear out your hair and put on sack cloth. But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! ‘Let us eat and drink, you say, ‘for tomorrow we die.'” Isaiah 22: 11-13. They did not see God's hand at work in the judgments brought against them and therefore felt no need of repentance. Let's rebuild the French Quarter and Bourbon Street and let the booze flow!

They felt only the need to rebuild. And for this, of course, they asked for God's assistance. They did not want Him, they just wanted His assistance to help them rebuild. Listen to what God told Isaiah about this state of affairs, “The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: ‘Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,' says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah 22:14. What was the sin that would not be atoned for? The refusal of the people to repent and return to Almighty God. We are in this very state today.

God's judgments are raining upon us from airplanes crashing into buildings, to bloodshed in the streets, to wars, to natural disasters, to the systematic draining of our wealth. God is calling for us to return to Him, but we see it not. Neither did the people in Isaiah's time: “…When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the Lord. O Lord your hand is lifted high but they do not see it.” Isaiah 26: 9-11.

Was there something specific that God wanted His people to repent of ? “See the Lord is coming out of His dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her; she will conceal her slain no longer.” Isaiah 26:21. The innocent blood of millions upon millions of innocent babies slain by the abortionist's knife is going to meet us face to face. We will be confronted with our sin that would not be found out. Innocent blood has a voice, and it is crying out to God for vengeance. Vengeance is coming.

If we do not repent over the shedding of innocent blood in our nation, the hammer God uses upon us to bring us to repentance will only grow larger. We will become like a naked flagstaff on a mountaintop, until all of our sin is exposed and the blood of the innocent children slain by abortion comes to light and is confessed and repented of. This is the Father side of God which is stern indeed. But it is stern only to bring us to the place where He can have compassion on us once again. Hear His words to America:

“O people of Zion who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious He will be when you cry for help! As soon as He hears, He will answer you. Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.'…when the Lord binds up the bruises of His people and heals the wounds He inflicted.” Isaiah 30: 19-26.

The prophetic ministry of our day is to proclaim the truth about the shedding of innocent blood. This is the father side of God desiring His children to be protected from the horror of abortion. If we do not heed the calling and continue to do mercy ministry at the expense of defending the weak and fatherless, God will call us into account. True wisdom has two sides. He knows how to make us cry.

God has more disaster than our federal government has relief.
