Our God is Able - Thou Shalt Not Steal!
We are standing on the precipice of the greatest opportunity the Church in America has been given to show that our God reigns and His name is Jesus!
I was watching Shepherd Smith as he was covering what was going on in New Orleans and Biloxi as the people were robbing and looting. Another Fox reporter said, "Shepherd, this is not about stealing, this is about survival.” I was stunned! In that one statement they wiped out the objective standard for Truth which is the Word of God – yes, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, whatever anyone needs for survival, just go ahead and take it. This should never ever be the case.
This is a scathing inditement as to where we've come as Americans. When Black Friday occurred, men stood in long soup lines. People don't stand in lines today. They’re going to take what they want no matter who they trample over. We no longer have any internal government constraining the sinful desires and passions of our flesh. There’s a spirit of “I'm going to take care of ME!” We've sown to the wind and now we are reaping the whirlwind.
I am sure many in America let out a sigh of relief when that reporter called it survival. Let me tell you, in God's economy this is wrong. Do not steal is one of the Ten Commandments. When there is a need, we should pray and seek the Lord’s help, then leave it up to God. He’ll give us the wisdom and knowledge we need and show us ways to get food.
We can be, and should be, the answer to prayer for those folks in Mississippi. This is a shining opportunity to take the Gospel of Christ to those in need.
If you doubt this just look at what has happened today. God has provided all the medical supplies we need. He has provided bed sheets. He has provided food. He has provided baby formula. He has even provided sun tan oil. We didn’t get these items by stealing, but by making our requests known and waiting upon the Lord. “And this is the victory that overcomes the world – even our faith.” He provides for us in the most extraordinary ways! We do not have to resort to stealing. Our God will provide. It has been one miracle after another. None of us knew what we were doing twelve hours ago as we began to organize our efforts to help those in Mississippi and now were having radio stations, churches, and individuals coming to our aid like we have never seen.
God has given us the most extraordinary avenue to meet the needs of folks devastated in this tragedy called Katrina. The government can’t fix it. Nobody can fix it. What we have always said has come true, “God will get us in a fix that we can’t fix so that He Himself can fix us.” In the midst of this tragedy, we are on the threshold of perhaps one of our greatest days to shine for the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us not fail Him now.
Let us show the Shepherd Smiths and commentators of this world that though our government is helpless and hapless in the midst of this catastrophic tragedy, our God is able! Let’s let God show up and show off! That’s right! Let’s allow the theology of the church house to become biography in the streets.
We have purposed in our hearts to be standing on the promises of God rather than sitting in the premises of the church building. We don’t have to steal. We don’t have to beg. We simply need to lean on the everlasting arms of Jesus!
